A story rooted in adventure and connection
From the powder peaks of Myoko to fireside conversations among friends, Namazu Lodge was created for travellers who believe that the best places feel like home, even when you’re far away.
Born from a love of Japan and the spirit of discovery.
In 2024, Australian pub guy/hotelier? Mick Deer followed a long-held dream and a new adventure. To create something special in Japan’s Myoko region, one of the country’s most celebrated snow destinations.
What he found was more than a business opportunity, it was a chance to build a community of travellers who share his love for nature, skiing, and Japanese culture.
From that dream came Namazu Lodge, the first property in the growing Shika Family of Stays. The goal was simple: To offer authentic, comfortable stays that feel purposeful and personal. A place where the snow is deep, the fire is warm, and connection comes naturally.
Inspired by the Catfish. Strong, steady, and full of character.
In Japanese, Namazu means catfish. A creature known for its strength, adaptability, and connection to the earth.
It’s said that Namazu lives beneath the islands of Japan, stirring the ground when it moves. A reminder of nature’s power and balance.
For us, the name is symbolic. It represents our belief that travel should move you. Grounding you in place while stirring something within.
Part of the Shika Family of Stays
Namazu Lodge is the flagship property of the Shika Family of Stays, a growing family of boutique accommodations across Japan.
Each property, from Kuma House (Bear) to Tanuki House (Raccoon) celebrates the natural and cultural heritage of its region, with a shared focus on comfort, connection, and sustainability.
Together, they embody the Shika philosophy:
